We overcome fear by embracing acceptance

Yesterday I raised concerns about overly zealous politically correct influences that I don’t believe are helpful to promoting the “get along attitude” that most Australians have.

What most of us enjoy is a  “get along attitude” because it is more accepting than mere tolerance that is promoted with a divided and fragmented community.

After yesterday’s comment I got a message online from one of my friends who thought I was getting caught up in a media beat up and even fabricating some hysteria about an issue that he doesn’t think exists at all.

Now the reason this person doesn’t see the intolerance towards others in the same way the rest of us see it is quite simple.

He gets along with other people, including those who have different religious beliefs to him, he doesn’t just tolerate them, he accepts them and often as friends, like most Aussie do,

But that doesn’t mean that Australia’s freedoms and cultural icons, the traditions and cultures that we know and love aren’t under attack and don’t need defending.

What makes Australia a better place is the freedom to celebrate religious celebrations openly and freely and for us all to embrace each other in acceptance.

and if some whinger or politician or administrative panel or public servant writing a memo tries to tell us we can’t celebrate those beliefs openly for fear of some fictional person taking offence....tell em to

…. turn it up

Our Freedoms under attacks

Today The Australian newspaper carries survey results from a Macquarie University survey that reminds us that some in our society are so closed minded that they put the views of atheists and agnostics forward as true and factual and anyone with any other view is treated as somewhat mentally ill and derided.
This has been an attitude by those with spontaneous and self inspired wisdom on the “left” of political discourse and it is hypocritical because if someone had labelled those who don't believe in God has having disturbing beliefs and mocking their views as being simply made up you know they wouldn't stand for it.
Religious instruction in schools is protected by constitutional law (The reason church run schools were given over to the state to run was because the state “promised” to protect these rights) and it is so in order for parents to ensure that the religion they believe is taught to their children.

It isn't a matter for some university lecturer or some philosophy student, or even some radical political social experimenter to decide what your children and mine should be taught about what our family's religious believes. Scripture class is the final place where parents still get to have any influence over how their own children are educated.
I thought we still living in a country where the importance of the family, freedom of religion and freedom of speech were important and protected – yeah right - Turn It Up.

What is cultural diversity if not diverse and cultural?

Let me pre-empt today's comment with some background.

For years I have used a saying: "If you try to offend no one you may end up offending everyone."

How often have you been offended that your religious and cultural festivals, days and moments have been banned because of some so called potential clashes with other groups who frankly mostly speak up and say they enjoy the diversity and welcome given to cultural celebration.

In Australia we speak of "cultural diversity" but we must ask what use is it to promote cultural diversity if we dare not celebrate culture or diversity?

The so called politically correct gang have struck again, last week it was reported that Vic-Roads, has told staff not to pause for a minute's silence at 11am on 11th day of the 11th month because someone in the administration of that department has suggested that showing respect might be culturally offensive to someone.
The ban on this Australian tradition did not come out of some community outrage or even some anti war protesters getting the whole thing confused. No. It was simply some confused policy of banning something just in case someone … somewhere … somehow …. might perhaps … possibly … take some offense.
Well, as we approach Christmas time let me put on the record for all of those Australians, be the Christian ,or be they simply part of this community in some way or another who accept that we all have diverse family and cultural backgrounds and we all get along quite well thank you very much without the interfering and meddling of someone who wants to stick their head in the sand and bland wash our culture until it is meaningless.
It is both inconceivable and strongly offensive for anyone to attempt to rub out any aspect of our traditional Australian religious and cultural practices, whether that is remembering the sacrifices of the past, showing respect to others or this Christmas calling it a holiday season … Turn It Up.
