Climate talk is hot air

As if things weren't bad enough, now we have self claimed climate expert and advisor to the government on all things hot air; Professor Ross Garnut; warning us that things were going to get worse. There is, he says, likely to be more big cyclones, and more flooding, in the future and it will be worse in the future... he said.


Which was a most interesting statement because it seems like only last year that he and his gang of Ducky Lucky and Ducey Lucy were running around telling us that Australia will be in permanent drought, we won't see rainfall on this continent again and we'll need to build desal plants.


Lets not forget that other people are taking the Professor's warnings seriously, a number of states starting installing desal plants when it looked like their dams would never be full again, and now those dams are full, and overflowing.
There are also a lot of other countries like Indonesia doing something about preparing for climate change if it does happen, and they are also doing it with money from Australian taxpayers, Turn It Up, I'm Michael Robinson

Homosexual characters not needed on all TV shows

Writer and producer of Star Trek, Brannon Braga has said, recently, that he now regrets not not including the portrayal of openly homosexual characters in the series in the Star Trek.
Frankly I think it is a good thing that they didn't include what he calls the wider spectrum of sexuality it would have been a distraction from
simplistic futuristic unreality the show at that time.
The earth's human population seemed to have solved every problem we currently face and set out to explore the stars, and yet if you watched the show they didn't actually answer how they solved anything but they talked about acceptance and unity.

Of course we all know that TV shows are going to carry subtle and sometimes not so subtle messages of what is important to the writer, producer and directing team, and often there will be plot lines and complications about the various agendas that they feel are important at the time.
Everyone is going to say a show like that should have covered something that is important to them … to raise awareness and acceptance …. so ….
Does every movie, every TV show and every episode of every program need to include a token person from every walk of life?

Bush requires back burning prevention


Governments with their structures, resources and focus are, for the most part, ready and able to jump into a crisis management role and we've seen that in the floods of late. Of course some governments do crisis management responses better than others. While some of us could cope with a major regional disaster for a day or two - disaster and survival experts suggest we should all prepare our homes and supplies to ensure we are prepared to sustain ourselves for at least 8 weeks if a major disaster event should occur.
The difference of this sort of preparation of course is comparing the crisis management of disaster response to the proactive preparation that can be undertaken.

I was reminded yesterday that we haven't seen many bush fires for a while and that is a good thing but there is one aspect of that, however, that is a warning signal – our governments are slipping up on the prevention side of bush fire management.

After the Canberra and in Victoria bush fire disasters, the inquiries found that it was essential to do regular - preventative - back burning every few years in order to reduce the fuel load so that devastating bush fires do not occur.

So you'd expect that our governments would make pre-emptive and preventative fire-load-reduction-burn-offs a priority and allow people to do back burning, .....Turn It Up.

Casualties of supermarket price war.


As most people in Australia would know by now, the two biggest Australian supermarket chains having a price war on bread and milk.
When I speak with people to almost a person the reactions, comments and feedback raise two issues when we speak about this issue, and they aren't just about bread and milk, or about supermarkets.

They are the issues that have been relevant for many years.

The first one was is that most people look at lower prices in the selfish / short term aspect and they like them, frankly who can blame them, especially if you have a tight family budget and have to stretch it.
It you can find milk, bread, even meat, and fresh produce and cheaper prices it is quite understandable that you don't look beyond the price at the bottom of today's receipt.

However, that is not where it stops it gets a bit more complex, more complicated, as people start to question why would these big supermarket chains both do this?
Sure some of it is to match each other, but competition isn't fair when your business is so large that you control both the lines of supply and the retail business.
If the Australian people want to keep competition alive we must support the local independent retailers and local Australian farmer producers.
As for government regulation and waiting for the government to regulate powerful oligopolies in the market place??? … Turn It Up.
