Yesterday’s comments by Tony Abbott fired up some intense protests by some members of the Aboriginal community Tent Embassy,
So I think most Australians will be asking what did Tony Abbott say that was so controversial?
Well basically he said what most Australians think.
Times have changed. Things have been greatly improved for Aborigines in Australia since the Tent Embassy protest was set up on January 27th 1972. 40 years ago today
He said it’s time to move on.
He didn’t actually say close it down but that was how it seems to have been taken and frankly I’d say many Australians consider the Tent Embassy as a someone curious oddity.
Now 40 years later things are significantly different, and there are still a few tough issues that linger as a reminder that there is still some work to be done.
Not the least of which is the us and them approach, and I can’t help but thinking that it is probably time for that attitude to be left behind as well.
Sure when the British first landed and started to settle Australia where you were born, how you were raised and your skin colour were all very important,
but does it help anyone for us to continue dividing Australia based on those criteria?
Turn It Up
