One of the big challenges Prime Minister Julia Gillard and her Treasurer Wayne Swan have in their economic credibility is the artificial line in the sand that they drew saying they would achieve a surplus by next year.

Athough a surplus is important particularly at a time when some sectors of the Australia economy are generally are doing very well but others are not, it is even more important to scrutinise the finer details of the government’s budget and not just one stand alone figure.

For instance there is little point for a property investor to make a profit if they don’t maintain their properties so that prosperity is continued into the future.  Or for a farmer to make a a profit,or a surplus if you want to call it that, if they don’t maintain their lands and their equipment, or protect their seed.

Of course it is important that government spending not exceed revenues forever and  there are times when spending for the long term prosperity of the country is more important than achieving a surplus at all costs.

With the constant spin on the surplus taking attention away from the closer budget scrutiny you don’t suppose they’d be doing that deliberately to avoid public discussion of detailed budget issues?
