Mining magnate and one of Australia’s richest, Clive Palmer suggested that America’s CIA might be behind funding of groups that are fighting coal mining in Australia and they could be doing that too, if you will excuse the play on words, to undermine the Australian competition to American mines and products.

Now let me get this clear. 


 I’m not saying Clive Palmer is wrong, but I’m not saying he is correct either.

What his comments did do, and did it very effectively, was to alienate a lot of people who were starting to take an interest in coal mining, and coal seam gas mining.
That is lots of ordinary Australian people who were starting to get politically active and take an interest in the long term consequences of mining and in the issues that directly affect Clive Palmer. 

After his comments many of those people now have conflicting thoughts about expressing their concerns for the long term environmental issues.  Essentially he has silenced a lot of them.

Many ordinary people who were very vocal in their opposition to the down-sides of particularly the coal seam gas fracking processes and
some of the coal mining projects near environmentally sensitive areas where Clive Palmer has mining interests.

Most of the media just turned the whole episode into a joke.  Do you think they even noticed that one man with one press conference silenced  public opposition to his business plans?
