Spin replaces substance in public policy debate

Over the past weekend, and  longer, the entire Federal Government have managed to focus public and media attention on but a handful of relatively minor issues.

As a deliberate political tactic it helps them dodge the big questions about the big issues.

Things like; What are you actually doing about the important issues that are important to Australians?

By focusing a lot of the media attention and therefore much of the public debate over minor issues such as:

... whether or not they maintain their commitment to having a surplus in 2012/2013 is actual a distraction.   

It is spin in the place of substance.

For most Australians, you can’t really spend too much more than you have available. Sometimes you can borrow a little extra, but governments aren’t as  tightly constrained.

Governments are able to, and usually see the benefits, in investing money in the future.

They fund education, and hospitals and roads and the like because it contributes to a more productive economy which brings in the cash to pay back the investment and to make more investments.

Instead what we see from the Gillard government is them constantly looking backwards to a promise to maintain an artificial budget bottom line, and spin Moving Forward...

Last week it was hard to miss. The Prime Minister’s award winning attempt at the world’s greatest spin.  Hot on the heels of the Government’s back slapping love-in

-over  passing the Carbon Tax legislation (*see note below)

- the Federal Government cut short the celebrations and then introduced legislation to the lower house that it knew would not pass.

It was obvious why.

They get hammered every time they  talk about the Carbon Tax.

So politically it was time to take attention off the carbon tax.

But we should not forget that when Julia Gillard became Prime Minister she told the Governor General that she could form government and work with the parliament that had been elected.

Then last week Julia Gillard told us that she was a victim of the Opposition doing what oppositions do.  She wanted Australians to know that  ...

... this government is a government of no responsibility that does not recognise reality and it is all Tony Abbott’s fault.
