Neither Tax nor Trading Will Halt Pollution

I'm am still having trouble with this whole political obsession with all things carbon and yet all other pollutants are virtually ignored.

With talk about carbon tax, carbon trading, carbon emissions things and it came home to me yesterday as I was reading an article in The Australian online that quotes Greg Combet Labor's Mr Fix It who said these words in refusing to rule out a move towards nuclear energy:

I paraphrase here when he said: “What you achieve with a price on carbon is that by pricing the pollution you change the relative cost of using difference fuel sources to produce energy.”

So what does that tell us? With governments talking about pricing the pollution that means that they've accepted they aren't going to do anything about stopping the pollution and the more profitable companies can continue to pollute.

The other point we can't forget is that someone thinks nuclear energy doesn't have any pollution that could damage the environment at all ….does it? …....Turn It Up.

Do we get...Value for public money spent.

I thought today I'd just take a look at one aspect of one issue, of the BER, Building Education Revolution, and the Stimulus payments and why the Federal Opposition are listening to the public and focussing on this issue.

This is something that I have been disappointed in the independents in the parliament and their lack of interest in requiring the government to focus on getting value for money when it spends the public money.

The government's intention and focus for the stimulus spending was.... to spend it, it was not the government's focus or priority to get value for money, that would have delayed projects and their focus and intention was to spend that money quickly.
When asked about value for money at the time the government's response was along the lines of … spend it and spend it fast and don't worry about those sorts of things.
So now we are supposed to believe that just because Julia Gillard said the magic words “value for money” suddenly the entire focus of this government has done a one eighty from one that spends money as quickly as it possibly can, with very little concern about value for money to now be a government that is focussed on getting value for money?

No Bob No

Last week the Greens and Independents in the Lower House voted NOT to require the government to send the NBN off to the Productivity Commission not are they going to require the government to release hundreds of pages on critical business information. It would almost be enough to make a skeptic person wonder what back room deals have been done on this.

The government says “trust us” we wouldn't waste public money. But the Opposition is lining saying that a project like this simply needs more public scrutiny.

When you have such a big public project a lot of people can get excited by the upside and the positives and no matter how important they are it is important that closer scrutiny and accountability be applied, especially to projects when you are dealing with a government who promised more transparency, and improved accountability.

No … instead the Greens and Independents decided for us that we don't need to see the details, in fact Bob Katter went so far as to say his decision was based entirely on the his own circumstance that he does not have the time, resources or the ability to read and understand the hundreds of pages that would have been released to the public. Turn It Up.

How can he be conflicted when he is OPPOSING it? and requiring MORE public srutiny before it could proceed???  Talk about a classical flip

Federal Government's Budget Assumptions Leave a Black Hole in Credibility

For anyone with a memory long enough to go back to that recent extended Federal election result they might recall the fuss that was made by the ALP and two of the numbers men among the independents result.

At the time much was made about some of the savings calculations that Tony Abbott and the Liberals had made by calculating that they would save between 7 and 11 billion dollars by, in short, not wasting so much money as the prior Labor government had.

At the time the figure was bandied around as a black hole but it was only ever accounting assumptions

Well what a difference a few months make.

Yesterday we saw the Federal Government down playing its own ten billion dollar black hole in predictions trying to focus public attention on their own spin.

All the while the reality of their little splash of cash of spending somewhere around forty billion dollars on consumer items in what they called stimulus spending has now come home to roost and more Australians are realising that money should have been spend on long term capital infrastructure.

Spending on things like rail and ports ... and improvements that are desperately needed in order for exporters, like the mining sector, to export.

Why?  Exporters export and in doing so earn money for this nation, if the government (or someone) doesn't provide the export capital infrastructure then we earn less because they export less.  (As a side note that is why some large mining companies have gone ahead and built their own rail and ports, not waiting for the governments over the years to do what was needed, and they were happy to because they were earning more money by having that infrastructure there ..... so why can't the federal government see the same thing?)

….Now the government has to go further into debt and that will push inflation up, but they say trust us, don't look at reality look at our assumptions and predictions ….
