Tony Abbott has been refocusing his attention to get the message out of late that a Coalition government would turn the refugee boats back.
What I find interesting about this is the that United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, among others, has criticised the Abbott approach.
While we can understand the UN’s position is to remind Australia that they want us to take refugees it is important that the UN and other refugee advocates don’t get so caught up in their own message that they forget reality.
The reality is that people are not only at risk of dying when they get into these dangerous, leaky, over crowded vessels but many have died trying to get to Australia in this way.
Tony Abbott is saying he is going to use every resource available to Australia to protect those vulnerable and desperate people, to protect them, and their children, to keep them safe and protect their lives.
He is saying he will work to stop uncaring criminals from taking their money and sending them out to sea in the hope that Australia might rescue their sinking vessel before they drown.
For that the UN criticises him?
