Please don't sell off our future

Recent news reports rub salt into the scarred and wounded NSW taxpayer, reminding us that if the NSW Government had borrowed money and built the toll roads, we'd own them by now and the tolls could either be done away with soon or partially wound back and the balance put into new road projects.
Instead of the government coming out and saying OK we got it wrong, no instead they trot out some nonsense that if they had borrowed money the state's credit rating might, and lets emphasise might, not have looked so great.

The problem I see with the political fascination and over enthusiasm for public private partnerships is that the government is asking some big company to, literally, do all the dirty work for them. The borrowing of money, the planning, the digging, the construction and the collection of tolls. There is no down side for a government from the way politicians and public servants look at the project. They bring in private expertise and someone else delivers on their political promise.
And as we already know many a government simply does not care whatsoever about the long term future. So what is the alternative you might well ask? Nothing. Both of Australia's major political parties love Public Private Partnerships and are happy to overlook that one lingering problem the public have with selling off our assets and our future … Turn It Up.

Government scared off when public takes up their rebate schemes

Over the past few days we've had announcements by successive governments that some time in the next generation or two the NSW could duplicate the harbour tunnel, but not any time soon. We've also seen the government panic because so many people took up a lucrative solar energy subsidy scheme that saw them be paid money for generating solar energy and putting it into the grid, but the government is now worried that lots of people have taken up that scheme and now its actually costing lots of money so they are winding it back.

Hang on, isn't that the point of such a scheme to actually have people take it up? Or has the government suddenly had a wake up call that a lot more work needs to be done on renewable energy sources before they become cost effective and they shouldn't be wasting public money on such schemes until they are at least a little more efficient.

Then of course there are the roads and traffic systems throughout NSW, if you are in the country you have to put up with poorly constructed roads and in the city poorly constructed overcrowded roads the recent government solution is to tell people to have less children....Turn It Up. I'm Michael Robinson

From Education Revolution to ...???.....well frankly to not one.

It was back to school for most school children this week, which reminds me that is was not only Kevin Rudd but also Julia Gillard who really pushed the government line of the need for an Education Revolution.

So what comes next you might well ask, after BER and Education Revolution what does the Gillard 2010 government have to offer education?

First Peter Garrett is announced Minister, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth , not a revolution.

Unfairly tainted with some of the legacy of the insulation batts farce which we can now realise not all that was the Minister's fault but largely the fault of the poor management and administration by Cabinet and the public service. Sure Peter Garratt lost his Minister ship position for a short while, but what happened to the people who really failed the public ignoring concerns a Minister had raised?

Did they get sacked, or follow Kevin Rudd into Foreign Relations? … Or simply stay working in their positions in the Public Service administration of important government matters, virtually untouchable no matter what mistakes are made, it doesn't seem right does it.
