Police State type security isn't something Governments can enforce in a free society

Last Friday Sydney’s Harbour Bridge was closed for a about an hour in the morning peak traffic time.

There are two general issues that were much of the discussion across Sydney that day that we should not ignore.

The first one, is the issue of whether the NSW Department of Community Services is serving the community, particularly families and children, in the best possible way.
On any view the answer is a NO.

DOCS have to improve, there can be no question about that.

Sure it is a difficult portfolio, but they must do better.

The other issue is security, public security on places like the Harbour Bridge.

Not long after September 11, 2001, ten years ago, these exact same security issues were raised about some of Sydney’s icons, and vulnerable infrastructure.

The NSW Government told us then that they would, and they did, undertake a security review.

Does anyone seriously think we can secure all places at all times?

I'd be shocked if the PM didn't

Rudd shock leaks - I'd be shocked if the PM didn't

Well anyone following the Wiki Leaks story of late will know that yesterday the world was shocked by reports telling us that Kevin Rudd had not only spoken with American Diplomats but he had urged them to be firm and cautious with China...my translation.

Yes apparently just when everyone thought Rudd as PM only ever spoke in Chinese and to the Chinese on international issues WikiLeaks reveals a completely different story.

Will China be surprised by all this? Not at all. Security and international intelligence experts tell us that no one in those communities will be surprised by any of this as countries spy on each other and know what the other is saying in these sorts of diplomatic discussions but its still best left as back channel chatter.

What is a bit surprising to me is for some over the past day to feign surprise that Kevin Rudd would be urging America to play nice with China but be prepared to get tough and perhaps even to use military force if necessary.

Keep in mind that countries like China would have their ways of knowing what was being discussed. Knowing that would anyone seriously suggest that we would be better served if the Australian Prime Minister's correspondence with our allies like America contained the terms “she'll be right mate”?

Turn It Up

(P.S. Yes I know I haven't linked to the Wiki .. Leaks site itself …. is it that hard to find?)

The 'mud' the PM throws in strong wind blows back in her face

On Friday I spoke about the news reports that Tony Abbott hadn't visited the troops in Afghanistan well has has not it can be revealed and it was a planned trip that Julia Gillard knew he would take. She could have said that when her office was asked, rather than take a cheap shot because he didn't go with her

you would think news that Abbott's recent visit had been planned and Julia Gillard knew about it would so some media (see point one) and the Prime Minister eating their words, but no Julia Gillard shas turned it back on Tony Abbott saying

``I am not concerned about the hurly-burly of politics,'' she said.

``I think my reputation in the parliament particularly is that I give as good as I get ... So I'm not worried about that.''
and then she goes on to talk about
the debate which focuses heavily on gender politics. And suggests Tony Abbott should check his facts.

This from a Prime Minister who recently stood before the Australian people pledging a kinder, gentler and more bipartisan cooperative parliament in the interests of stability, and at the first opportunity she's using her office and security information she is privy to to attack the Opposition leader …. Turn It Up … I”m Michael Robinson
