A woman's role is in the .....

Well yesterday was International Women's Day, and now it has been and gone and we all survived the rush to jump on the feel good band-wagon.
I just hope I come out of today's comment unscathed.

Often this issue of women's roles and representation comes up and we ask: Should women make up half or quarter or one third or some quota figure of the membership of company boards, Members of Parliament or even Ministers and other senior public positions.

Firstly let me say I'm not in favour of quotas that will determine positions are determined by anything other than merit for either men or women, or for people with certain coloured skin or places of birth what is the point of that?

Positions of merit should be determined by merit, not by quotas or token affirmative action appointments that basically say … you aren't up to it but because you are a women you get the promotion over others more capable....

.... Turn It Up.

Neither Tax nor Trading Will Halt Pollution

I'm am still having trouble with this whole political obsession with all things carbon and yet all other pollutants are virtually ignored.

With talk about carbon tax, carbon trading, carbon emissions things and it came home to me yesterday as I was reading an article in The Australian online that quotes Greg Combet Labor's Mr Fix It who said these words in refusing to rule out a move towards nuclear energy:

I paraphrase here when he said: “What you achieve with a price on carbon is that by pricing the pollution you change the relative cost of using difference fuel sources to produce energy.”

So what does that tell us? With governments talking about pricing the pollution that means that they've accepted they aren't going to do anything about stopping the pollution and the more profitable companies can continue to pollute.

The other point we can't forget is that someone thinks nuclear energy doesn't have any pollution that could damage the environment at all ….does it? …....Turn It Up.

Gay marriage is no happy political issue

Monday 's topic

Gay marriage is not a happy political issue.

Well the Sydney Mardi Gras has been and gone. Another year of bad stereotypes, even worse public behaviour and political agendas have come out and perhaps now we can recognise the tiny number of people that are calling for changes.
Marriage is a religious issue and therefore it is a matter for the states, and frankly, religious organisations.
If Bob Brown wants to manipulate Julia Gillard, or the parliament, into thinking that a majority of the public supports him then Julia Gillard needs to remember what the make up of both houses of Federal Parliament actually is.
Between Labor and the Coalition together they hold the largest majority in both houses of Federal parliament.
There are urgent and important issues the Federal Parliament should be dealing with but Julia Gillard, breaking yet another political promise, is letting a minority party turn her head and pull her strings…....Turn It Up.
