In a democracy they represent us

Federal Independent MP Tony Windsor has had 20 years experience in politics so you would think he would understand that if a politicians let alone a Prime Minister does something that the public don't like the Australian will, and does public speak up, sometimes quite strongly.

Now let me say up front that in Australia today there is absolutely no reason, no excuse, no justification whatsoever for violence, or even threats of violence.... especially in the democratic debate.

Certainly not over policies and decisions of the parliament whether a politician is being truthful or not.

That said if Tony Windsor, or anyone else on the carbon tax joint committee, think that the Australian public are not genuinely angry over the carbon tax announcement then they, our representatives, aren't listening to the people, they represent.... well then it is time to ….

Food regulator dragging their feet

Earlier this week I mentioned the dangers that gluten in food holds for some people, like other food allergies and sensitivities it is an issue of health for many people.
Now these concerns about allergies and reactions to foods aren't just linked to whole foods like grains, wheat, even nuts and other foods.
To complicate things there are many food additives in many commercial foods that aren't even listed on the labels. As more information is known about the dangers of these substances worldwide more is being done to ban them, or at least disclose to consumers which products contain what additives.
This level of information is essential
Increasingly more people are finding out that avoiding sources of gluten or various additives is beneficial and essential to their health and well-being.
Online help as well as support groups are an invaluable source of information for the growing number of people who are learning that it is in our best interests to avoid the many additives that are put into our food not for our health or well being, but to increase the profitability for the manufacturer.
While many of those additives are banned overseas Australia's regulators are dragging their feet on banning or even requiring full disclosure on labels because they say that may cause concern among consumers, and that statement is supposed to reassure us?

A failure of priorities in drug policy

Nicholas Cowdry, the NSW Director of Public Prosecutions put in his two cents worth this week at the NSW talk-fest saying if drugs were legalised there would be less drug crime.

Think about it, I wonder if he says the same thing about robbery and murder as well.

For 12 years I've been involved with Australian and International expert organisations working for the prevention of addiction and substance abuse.

In that time I've heard and read all the arguments and the misguided statements that legalisation will improve things. It doesn't.

You need law enforcement, education and the health system to all work together.

Of course there is no argument that Australia can do better in regards to all addictions and all substance abuse.

However the failures of Australia's drug policy are not so much with either education, law enforcement or health, though each area does need some improvements, the failure is a failure to make prevention a priority.

Since 1985 prevention has relegated to be an afterthought starved of policy focus and funding.

Management of addiction has become the priority and now after two and half decades of the same group of people advising the Federal Government and pushing their harmonisation drug policy agenda now they have the nerve to say it isn't working ....

Food and nutrition for health not government

For years I've been extremely interested in health issues, and this segment is all about cutting through the nonsense and getting some facts and insights.

Yesterday I spoke about school lunches.

We all know that it is important to eat healthy and real health means eating, vibrantly colourful, natural fruits and vegetables as the majority of our nutrition because these foods as part of a diverse food intake are the things that keep us healthy.

However if you take an informed look at the food pyramid that is widely pushed on us and taught to our children in school you discover the proportions are allwrong for our health, they simply just don't promote good health.
It says nothing of the dangers that gluten causes for many people and fruits and vegies are relegated to a minor role rather than the major role they should in fact be.

The reason is simple sadly the food food pyramid is not actually a health message but a marketing approach from government economists and if you want to be healthy you have to eat what keeps you healthy.

The same lesson applies when it comes to global climate health. The Carbon Tax was designed by economists, will it help the planet?
