In October I raised an issue in this segment about Australia’s peak health advisory body, The National Health Medical Research Council.

The NHMRC are supposed to be a completely independent scientific body.  Their role to advise the Federal Government but have been caught out doing the political bidding of lobby groups.

In this particular document they review Naltrexone implants, the long term medication delivery type developed by Dr George O’neill in Perth and used to help addicts overcome their addictions.

They refer to studies by Professor Hulse where Hulse concludes that the Naltrexone implants studies are scientifically significant and therefore safe in saving lives.

The NHMRC changed the scientist’s own words and in their document basically state that Hulse found the implants to be not significant and not safe.

They have allowed the NHMRC to get away with publishing public advice documents that contains incorrect information.  It will not only cost lives, but it sends a big signal that the advice the government is getting from the NHMRC is not independent on any view.

With a document that important and lives on the line you’d think the government would at least withdrawn it from the website while they hold an inquiry … wouldn’t they?
