Criminal gangs are outsmarting Customs using amazingly simple methods.

Yesterday I spoke about a long running concern regarding some significant failings of the Australian Customs Service.

When you mention border control most people think about imports or immigration.

At the beginning of this year Ports Australia, the peak industry body, raised the same concerns that I have raised for almost ten years.

These include Australian Customs letting  both Australian and international law enforcement down when it comes to shipping containers exported from Australia.

Now understandably some people may well ask, who cares if it is being exported?
That is pretty much the approach that Customs has taken for all practical purposes.

They don’t seem greatly concerned that criminal networks have realised that if they leap frog their products and their profits through a network of low risk countries, like Australia,  - by shipping them from one country to the next and to another one,
and  that if you do that a few times then the shipping containers don’t show as a concern up on the Customs paperwork because the paperwork eventually indicates that the port of origin was not a high risk country.

After all criminals wouldn’t be so devious as to leap frog shipping containers all over the world just to make it near impossible to track the original country of origin would they?
