Get on yer bike

I have to declare an interest and perhaps a little bias on today's topic.
Knocked off my bike as a child, by a hit and run driver. It took me months to recover physically but to be blunt I never had the same enthusiasm for riding on the road again.

So watching Sydney's expanding network of bike paths even I must ask the question do we really need bike paths instead of roads?

The development of bike paths and safety for bike riders should not be at the expense of already overcrowded roads, Nor does it make sense to crush small businesses and dig up parking spaces and replace them with with bike paths that are used by only a handful of people.
Bikes and cars don't mix, there is no question about that. But city planners need to realise that cities are shared zones. We need roads, and parking, and footpaths and where it is possible, bike paths, but it should never be an either, or, situation.

Out of touch city planners who don't have to worry about real life activities might get re-elected by the inner city apartment dwellers, but do they represent the needs of the city? Turn It Up, I'm Michael Robinson

Doctors Who Fail First Aid Skills

Many years ago I was a eager branch member and assistant first aid trainer in the Lismore St. John's Brigade branch. During that time being trained and also helping in the training of others I learned a lot of valuable skills.
Since my days in the Lismore St John's First Aid Brigade I have relied on that training many times, sometimes for my own injuries, our children's, but also on a number of occasions to help complete strangers.
A few weeks ago while walking to a bus stop I witnessed an elderly lady sitting on a bus stop seat just lean forward and collapse onto the ground.
At the time, and with the assistance of two other people nearby who also had first aid we were able to help her and not long after she was moved into what is called the correct recovery position her condition improved so much so that by the time the ambulance arrived just a few more minutes later she had regained consciousness.

So it is that recent reports that doctors are not keeping up to date on their CPR skills is disappointing.
I'd like to see everyone who holds a driver's licence be required to do a First Aid Certificate course every time they renew their licence. As for the debate about changing triple zero to some European number … Turn It Up

Why we must keep a traditional Judeo-Christian legal foundation

I'm all for freedom of religion but don't expect me to hold my silence when a religion that claims it is of God excuses bad behaviour.

Now I know I may cop some flack for saying this in some circles as there are some who want historical traditional Islamic laws introduced in Australia, but I don't want any law that allows a man to “so called” discipline his wife and children when the courts of that law say it is alright if he does it and manages not to leave a mark.

A Court in the United Arab Emirates has ruled that a man can beat his wife and young children if no marks are left while disciplining them this being the limits of this right. Women also require a male's permission to travel or even drive in some countries.

Now some people might suggest its just a local lower court, no! Actually it was the United Arab Emirate;s highest judicial body the Federal Supreme Court that handed down this ruling.

And there are some in Australia seriously considering replacing the existing laws with traditional Judeo-Christian foundations with these Islamic laws … Turn It Up

Should we and can we prevent poverty?

Today's news carries a story about leading churches and charities who have called on governments for action on poverty here in Australia.

Now some may dare suggest that Bob Hawke dealt with this issue years ago, but as it turns out, he didn't.

In fact the poverty being talked about is a forgotten level of poverty. Of people, many of whom are working, renting homes or perhaps even paying mortgages but they earn such low levels of income, and when bills like electricity bills rise the money to pay those bills comes from the money they were using to buy food.

Many are too proud to ask for welfare assistance but even with welfare assistance when an Australian individual or family is struggling financially, struggling to pay their bills and to buy food, struggling to pay the electricity bills … Its not WHEN it comes to that, we already HAVE that in Australia.

Hopefully our politicians are listening to what these charities have to say today, because they are speaking up for those who aren't being heard by the same politicians who spend millions each year on spin doctors telling us how much they've helped us all. Turn it up. I'm Michael Robinson.

Labour influenced by Green's dripping policies

Anyone who knows me knows that I'm a keen gardener, and when I garden I add compost, mulch, manure, straw, kitchen scraps, sawdust … you get the idea. I'm no permaculture expert, but I know it works.

The result has been phenomenal, I have rich garden beds that grow wonderful vegies and with the organic matter in the soil and mulch on top of the soil it retains water in the dry like I could not have hoped for when I began.

I also have a preference for eating locally grown food, the less distance food has to travel the fresher it is, well all know that, and often food that comes from overseas who knows what toxins and pesticides got through the honest box at Customs not to mention less transport related pollution to get local food to local consumers

So I struggle with this issue of governments who say they want to protect the people and the environment then go about just taking the water off farmers to return it to river flows with no effort to see both have a future.

It strikes me that a government that can only take water away from farmers and leave them out to dry is leaving all Australians out to dry. Turn it up, I'm Michael Robinson

Other issues Australia's Green parties and their influence on the current government are failing us on.

From Education Revolution to ...???.....well frankly to not one.

It was back to school for most school children this week, which reminds me that is was not only Kevin Rudd but also Julia Gillard who really pushed the government line of the need for an Education Revolution.

So what comes next you might well ask, after BER and Education Revolution what does the Gillard 2010 government have to offer education?

First Peter Garrett is announced Minister, Minister for School Education, Early Childhood and Youth , not a revolution.

Unfairly tainted with some of the legacy of the insulation batts farce which we can now realise not all that was the Minister's fault but largely the fault of the poor management and administration by Cabinet and the public service. Sure Peter Garratt lost his Minister ship position for a short while, but what happened to the people who really failed the public ignoring concerns a Minister had raised?

Did they get sacked, or follow Kevin Rudd into Foreign Relations? … Or simply stay working in their positions in the Public Service administration of important government matters, virtually untouchable no matter what mistakes are made, it doesn't seem right does it.
