A friend of mine commented last week that parents should not allow their children to go to the Gold Coast for schoolies week.

While I understand the point they were making, my reply to them was that once your children finish their HSC it is more than a little bit late to start exerting your parental influence over their decisions and actions.

In the early 2000’s I was executive director of a national drug education organisation.  We worked closely with other similar organisations around the world who took similar successful approaches helping parents over a lifetime of their children’s education and decision making.

In that time I coined a term pre-emptive prevention.

You can encourage someone to take drugs around friends so if something bad happens their friends will call an ambulance.  But That isn’t really prevention.  That is a drug use management tactic the government call harm reduction.

Pre-emptive prevention is about a lifetime of raising young people to have no desire to abuse their mind or their body with harmful, dangerous or addictive substances.

Pre-emptive prevention is an approach that families and communities use very effectively worldwide in many countries, what about here in Australia?

Turn It Up.

  1. There has been much discussion about the issues of preventing disease through better food choices as with preventing overdose deaths by well managing drug use.

The point being drug use cannot be (just) managed if we are to prevent the harms and adverse consequences....it must be prevented.

In the same way food issues need people to choose to select and eat food that is healthy for them.

I think government recommendations of how we should eat have been one of the biggest "stuff ups" (yes I know it is a very technical term some people may have to Google it) of the millennium. In fact many of the Government recommendations have been so confused you could almost implement the opposite of the government recommendation and be better off....I do say this a bit "tung in 'check' (sic) because I don't want people to take that jibe out of context.

The government recommends you don't use illicit drugs, but then teaches drug use management rather than pre-emptive prevention to school students.

The governments of many countries recommend health, fitness and well being, but also promote a food plate or food pyramid that encourages people to eat a diet that is mainly red meat and sugar in it's various forms.

All carbs are sugar, be they bread, grains, or carbohydrate vegetables.

Of course we need a wide variety of vegetables including some carbs, but next meal you have ask yourself how much of this food will break down into some or another form of sugar?

Many processed foods are so devoid of nutrients, enzymes, or variety that the modern diet is worse than the primative diet.

Access to all foods has resulted in modern mankind restricting choices to less and less food types rather than choosing more nutrients we select a variety of foods with less nutrients.

I worked in the area of drug education for many years with a national and international drug education organisation and saw the lobbying that caused many government recommendations to not so much be the best option, but the least worst option that the majority of the loudest and squeakiest wheels would accept.

In short a compromise, and we all know that a compromise in politics is something that makes every one equally unhappy....including those with commercial influences.
