For many Australians the term GM or genetically modified food is something we’ve been hearing more about.   

We hear about tomatoes having more fish genes but the GM marketing people don’t want to promote as widely some of the other more controversial GM changes nor do they want consumers understanding how far some of the GM products are going.
Take corn for instance.  If you have a genetically modified corn crop it can be used to feed humans and animals.  As animal feed it could then in the beef, milk, chickens, eggs.  and can also be used to make corn syrup which is used as a sugar type product in many consumer products.  

I’ll speak about this issue in more depth over coming weeks, but here is a real concern with GM food.  

Take a grain of corn that looks like an original grain of corn and grows very similarly to the original corn plant or whatever other plant that has been modified.

But inside it’s DNA is a changed.  It could be new pesticide gene to kill off insects or some other genetic modification the geniuses have inserted into that plant.

The company behind that wants patent protections over their new product because they tell the patent office it is significantly different to ordinary corn.

At the same time they want to reassure consumers that it is exactly the same thing as the old corn and we don’t need to know what it is in.
