Electrifying power bills

The Daily Telegraph today carries a story about Government Ministers running a distraction campaign to cover up their true plans for electricity in NS.W.
If you do the maths previous governments have siphoned off over ten thousand million dollars from electricity customers and now our power bills must 'skyrocket' to replace that capital for repairs and new infrastructure … The result is there are more increases in our electricity bill ahead. Increases that are already exceeding 10 times the rate of the rise in household income.
Electricity is, after all, a government controlled essential service monopoly and the public must pay the bill, the government knows it.

They think they might get away with it. Maybe tossing the Salvation Army a few coins from government's loose change, might ease their guilty consciences, and it is much needed by those people like the Salvos help but the problem we all face is that government Ministers don't seem to truly understand the pain of having to decide to pay an electricity bill instalment and not eat that week. That isn't charity, that is extortion.
And the nonsense that the sky is falling is nothing but a distraction...
Turn it up.

The 'mud' the PM throws in strong wind blows back in her face

On Friday I spoke about the news reports that Tony Abbott hadn't visited the troops in Afghanistan well has has not it can be revealed and it was a planned trip that Julia Gillard knew he would take. She could have said that when her office was asked, rather than take a cheap shot because he didn't go with her

you would think news that Abbott's recent visit had been planned and Julia Gillard knew about it would so some media (see point one) and the Prime Minister eating their words, but no Julia Gillard shas turned it back on Tony Abbott saying

``I am not concerned about the hurly-burly of politics,'' she said.

``I think my reputation in the parliament particularly is that I give as good as I get ... So I'm not worried about that.''
and then she goes on to talk about
the debate which focuses heavily on gender politics. And suggests Tony Abbott should check his facts.

This from a Prime Minister who recently stood before the Australian people pledging a kinder, gentler and more bipartisan cooperative parliament in the interests of stability, and at the first opportunity she's using her office and security information she is privy to to attack the Opposition leader …. Turn It Up … I”m Michael Robinson

Public Toilets

Public toilets

Spare a thought for those forgotten people who find themselves out in public with the urgent need for a public facility.

Most of us are chronically dehydrated, put simply we just don't drink enough fresh, clean and pure water and as a result we can hold on.

But whether you are on the public transport system in Sydney, or out and about in the suburbs or in the country, and need to go the last thing you want to find is that city rail, or the local council have locked the toilets and there are no staff around.

How about not just having more staff, but also:

National policies that prevent anti-social behaviour and promote law enforcement, and education, to prevent drug use rather than handing out needles to drug users and then locking public toilets.

Sure there is the federal government public toilets website, log onto it some time and you could expect to hear the sound of public money being wasted.

What is the point of having a website that lists every public toilet but when you need one they are locked?

You might as well set up electric fences around the toilet block and have people …. er hum … well I'm sure you get the idea....Turn It Up …. I'm Michael Robinson

You just know everyone was thinking it but no one said it.

Its no secret now, I slept in yesterday missed the segment and I sincerely apologise for that. At least I don't get criticised by the national media like Tony Abbott did for admitting that he was human and jet lagged and wanted to be alert when he does meet with the troops.

Sure Tony Abbott is expected to represent the high regard the Australian people have for our serving troops but should he be risking parliamentary stability by going to the front line of a war zone at the same as the Prime Minister or should he hang back just in case the Opposition are needed to do a Stephen Bradbury in Australian politics?

No one wants to talk about it but should the worst possible thing happen to Julia Gillard during her visit to the front line troops the very people who talked about government stability, and a stable government going the distance would be asking why Tony Abbott was there with the PM at all.

The real issue should be the troops, not grandstanding politics or political mud slinging.

I'm sure Tony Abbott will visit the troops but visiting them with a Prime Minister who from day one has had a target on her back? Turn It Up …. I”m Michael Robinson

Next week's topics will include toilets you can't use to meat you shouldn't use.

Australian Industrial Relations

A story in the Australian today (See note 1. & 2) gets into this area of political promises and those words “never ever”.

During the election campaign the ALP scare tactics suggested that the Libs would bring back the worst of their previous industrial relations (IR) package (that the ALP had dumped) and of course there was no mention of some of the good points of previous policies.

This week Joe Hockey prominently began that process of recognising that Australians want a public debate about this issue.

Tony Abbott's recent election policy position was to maintain the Status Quo for a period of stability, and have that debate over the next few years.

(See note 3.)

But in 2010, and beyond, it would be undemocratic for certain sections of the media, or politics, to try and squash a public debate on industrial relations or start throwing misleading suggestions that the Coalition promised to “never ever” revisit the issue. Tony Abbott promised IR stability in this term, and a to follow the public's demands on future policy directions. That is what politicians are supposed to do and yet we will still get some who will criticise the Opposition for now listening to the public,

... Turn It Up.

I'm Michael Robinson.

Notes
------
1. With the election barely over and parliament under way the issue of Industrial Relations has been raised in a Peter van Onselen piece in the Australian today.

2.

3. About 10,000 votes nationally handed Kevin Rudd the 07 election but the ALP created a myth that there was overwhelming public support for significant Industrial Relations reforms. Therefore understandable when there was a public perception that the Kevin 07 Campaign had a mandate to dump Work Choices despite the 07 election reality of how close that election actually was. There actual difference between a Coalition loss and win that handed the 07 election to the Rudd ALP campaign was less than 10,000 votes nationally it was widely reported at the time.

4. There were some elements of Work Choices the public clearly disliked, but to the same extent jobs require confident employers and the ALP risks stifling that confidence.

Media Watch "PC Gone Mad" - Turn It Up Mike

Media Watch – Junior Master Chef Advertisers -
Episode October Long Weekend Monday 4th October.

Segment :Turn It UP Mike – Media Watch Segment on Master Chef Advertisers

Radio 2SM 60 second spot Tuesday, 5th October, 2010.
with Grant Goldman

I don't often take the time to watch the ABC's Media Watch program, and last night's episode confirmed why.

First they exposed Woman's Day for taking journalistic liberties with their Kate Ritchie wedding day cover story but then the segment was political correctness gone mad.

In a piece written by Greg White at the Coffs Habour Advocate
Greg gives readers his opinion about the now former Sports Minister Kate Ellis MP and how attractive she is. Well that is widely acknowledged neither Greg nor the Advocate have made a factual mistake there.

But then the Media Watch host starts to rip into the Junior Master Chef PROGRAM itself
and on what you might well ask? What spin, shenanigans and falsehoods are the people at Junior Master Chef up to?.

Well according to the next 4 minutes and 56 seconds of Media Watch the advertisers who advertise their products during the ad breaks in the Junior Master Chef episodes are not complying with the voluntary anti junk food advertising code that they haven't signed … Turn It Up.

I'm Michael Robinson.
