Do your homework, and let teachers teach and students learn and maybe homework won't be needed.

The issue of schools and homework has been in the national discussion this week and I must admit that for a long time I thought homework was a great opportunity for students to undertake self directed learning opportunities.

I still think it has that potential, but like many things in our education system the way homework is used simply doesn’t live up to it’s possibilities.

Homework, too often, becomes teachers passing bits of the curriculum on to be covered at home.

So we have to ask...

…. is that the reason for the falling education standards in Australia?

At least part of the answer is that we need teachers to be able to teach, not regurgitate national curriculum but  - really teach students how to learn.

In the current system they are little more than automated robots regurgitating national curriculum.

In most schools teachers have about 25 hours learning time with students in a week.

If we are going to improve the outcomes of education system then we are going to need to take the shackles off teachers and let them teach students how to learn

and what about the homework?

Turn It UP
