Recycling and landfill

Yesterday I was speaking with a local family who is demolishing an old house just down the road from us.

As we walked around the property I was staggered to see massive 100 year old hard wood beams
and a tin roof on the main house, that was but a few years old

All these are re-useable resources and yet they are now intended to be wrecked and removed and dumped into land fill,

One of the reasons is basically the cost.  It is quicker and cheaper to simply dump the lot in landfill than to try and reclaim and recycle any of these things.  Which makes council recycling programs rather ironic doesn’t it.

It is local councils who want us all recycling to reduce landfill,

When you think about the average family trying to build themselves a home and get out of it without too many nightmare council impositions or extra costs,

would they then also attempt to voluntarily reclaim or recycle tons of building material

without some sort of discount to the council development costs?
