Food imports highlight border security failures

In 1999 I began a long running investigation into Australia’s border security.

Note to download one part of one the Submissions made at that time click on the following link. Although repetitive the submission was written for a particular audience. Perhaps I will revisit the document at some point in time but for those interested I'm more than happy to explain the key points in a more concise form.

So it isn’t surprising to me when TV investigative reporting programs start looking into Australia’s imported food and their investigators and lab tests find that all isn’t as it appears.

As I found out, most people trust that our Australian Customs Service and The Australian Quarantine Service will serve and protect the interests of the Australian people but unfortunately that just isn’t the case, and it hasn’t been the case for decades.

I know every time I raise this issue someone will say that Customs are doing a great job, just look at all the stuff their seize and the searches they do at the airports.  The charade of what goes on at our international airports are a mask, a facade that has been put over a crumbing skeleton of structures and systems that don’t work.

If we take a close look at the example of food products that get produced all over the world and then are shipped to be processed in countries like New Zealand.  Sure it makes the “Packaged in” Label appear more consumer friendly

but are Australian consumers getting what we think we are getting from either the product we purchase or from our Nation’s Border Security arrangements?
