Local production necessary to our future

All this week this segment has focused on the need to keep Australian primary production alive and healthy.

At the same time our Prime Minister has given a commitment to support Free Trade liberalisation and back that up with productivity.

The problem with Prime Ministers mouthing this sort of terminology, as with many government policies, isn’t what they sound like, it is the fine print, and what that policy means in practice.

Trading with other countries is a part of modern international global life.
The problem for our future is that our current governments don’t seem greatly concerned about protecting, or even keeping, local production whether it is local food production or even manufacturing.

Sure they give car manufacturers fist fulls of money that no one wants to mention around budget time... but

What good is it to talk about bringing the government’s budget into surplus when that same government’s policy details in practice mean that as a country we can no longer feed ourselves?  ...
