Tragedy Highlights Failing Of Government's Policy

Yesterday's highly visible and emotional display of grief at the funeral of those who died attempting to get to Christmas Island two months ago is indeed a tragedy, but it is also a reminder of this government's failures on border protection.

WE cannot forget that those who have died in such a tragic way, died because they were attempting to get from a safe place to Australian shores and were attempting to do so in not only an illegal way, but also an extremely dangerous manner.

Instead of discouraging people from putting their lives and the lives and safety of their family at risk, this Federal Government spends almost $2.5 MILLION each and every month on accommodating these arrivals when they do get here, generosity you don't see our government showing Australians in difficulty.
Australians continue to show considerable compassion for refugees and we accept them here. However our compassion cannot ignore the dangers that the current Federal Government policy is encouraging people to undertake. Let us not forget many, if not all, of these people had spent months living in a safe place living where they were before they choose to put themselves and their family into a dangerous boat, and set out on a dangerous journey. Despite the obvious flaws with the policy the Gillard is asking the parliament for hundreds of millions of more to roll the welcome mat out at the end of this dangerous journey.
